When?
Practices are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30PM until 7:30PM.
Rugby has two season, fall and spring. The
fall season
starts in September and ends in November. The spring season starts in
March and
ends in April.
Where? GVSU's intramural/soccer fields near Laker
Village. The field is
located at
the back of parking lot H next to the intersection of the Children's
Center and
the traffic light on West Campus Drive.
Who? ANYONE! You do not need to have prior experience to play rugby at Grand
Valley. You can rely
on experienced
coaches and players to teach you the rules and skills needed to play
the game.
There are no tryouts. If you come to practice, you will play in games.
Why? Rugby is a fast growing sport in the United
States. Learn how to play a great game
against other universities throughout the Midwest
in a
competitive and friendly atmosphere.
I have class on Tuesday or Thursday nights, can I still play? It is
very
important to be at every practice, but missing a practice for class is
understandable.
Our philosophy is that school comes first, but missing more than one
practice a
week will make it difficult for you to understand the game.
Am I too
small to play rugby? You can never be too small to
play rugby. Everyone on the team plays a unique role.
Will I get hurt playing rugby? With every contact sport, there is risk
of
injuries. We will teach you the proper techniques to reduce the chances
of
injury.
What do I wear to practice? Appropriate gym clothes are fine to wear to
practice. You will also need to purchase cleats and a mouth
guard.
You may buy rugby cleats online, but soccer cleats work just as well.
What does it cost? Dues are $150 a year to play since rugby is a club
sport.
This covers many expenses throughout the season including travel,
jerseys,
shorts, socks, equipment, referees, and post game socials. However, you
will
have opportunities to earn back a portion of your dues depending on how
much
you fundraise and collect through donations. The more money you
raise/collect, the
more money you can earn back.
