Chapter History

The Iota Epsilon chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was chartered on December 4, 1974 on the campus of Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan and later re-established in 1980. The Iota Epsilon chapter was founded on our dear fraternity's principals; Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for All Mankind. The founders of the chapter were Lavon Cole, Paul Harvey, Abe Hill, Marvin Hill Jr.,Vance Holland, Michael Murphy, and Jesse Owens. Of course, there wouldn't be an Iota Epsilon if it weren't for the perseverant efforts from the brothers of the Zeta Beta chapter at Ferris State University.

Iota Epsilon was the first black Greek letter fraternity here at Grand Valley State University. Men who have come through Iota Epsilon have went on to attain masters and doctorate degrees, become doctors and lawyers, hold executive positions in fortune 200 companies, and have also had roles in movies such as "Remember The Titans". Since its inception, Iota Epsilon has epitomized the true spirit of fraternity, brotherhood, leadership, and service to both the GVSU and Grand Rapids communities.

It is noted that when great men are made, ALPHA shall make them and they too , shall walk amongst the stars. With 34 years of carrying the torch to allow the light of ALPHA to shine and holding the name high, we shall take no steps backward.
