Minority Science Education Center Program

Grand Valley State University offers a Minority Science Education Center (MSEC) program to encourage the development of minority students in the fields of pre-engineering and pre-health. The program provides students with ren ewable full tuition scholarships through the Bert Price Scholarship Program and up to four years in science/community related experience.

As a student in the program you will be assigned a mentor from your individual field of interest. Your mentor will help you to clarify your career goals and show you how your knowledge of science can benefit society. Your mentor is also advised about your course work and your progress in the program. As your academic and professional skills develop, your responsibilities and professional training will evolve accordingly.

Grand Valley State University will provide scientific work and research opportunities, when possible, for all students who qualify for the program

Criteria for Selection

Participants in the Minority Science Education Center Program are chosen on the basis of their achievements and their potential for success.

All applicants to the program must submit three letters of recommendation and a personal essay on their life and career goals. A personal interview is also required.

Renewal Criteria

In order to remain in the MSEC program, participants must enroll for and maintain a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester. In addition participants must:

Grand Valley has set up a program of Supplemental Instruction (SI) to help students succeed in their courses.

The Minority Science Education Center

The Minority Science Education Center (MSEC), located in the office of Minority Affairs/Multicultural Center, was established to address the concerns of minority students pursuing careers in science-related fields and to develop and implement programs of encouragement and support for minority student participant in the fields of science.

Application

 Students must apply and be admitted to Grand Valley State University by March I and must meet the selection criteria as outlined on the Minority Business Education Center Scholarship Program application before materials wi ll be accepted. Review of applications will start at the beginning of April and applicants will be selected no later than June 30.
