Group picture of people working on the cemetery	In February, 2008 I travelled to Fries, Virginia and helped a small town community with various tasks.  We stayed in the old Fries theatre which was attached to a community center with a gymnasium and kitchen. The first day we went to a local church and helped them rake and dig out an area that was rock infested that they wanted to turn into a cemetery. We also walked through the woods and picked up 30 garbage bags of trash that people would just throw into their woods. On the second day we went to a senior citizen home and spent the morning hanging out with the residents that lived there. In the afternoon we went to an elderly couple’s home and helped them with some yard work. We also threw the man a 93rd birthday party. On the third day we got to work at an elementary school, I played with little kids and helped them with their reading. We also helped construct games. We went and talked to the older students about college and answered a lot of questions they had about it. On the fourth day we went to another school up in the mountains and got split into different classrooms and paired with three or four students. They had a huge event where they were celebrating Dr. Suess’s birthday and we read books to the younger kids, and had a square dance. I learned that every year they have a group come on Dr. Seuss’s birthday and the kids always look forward to hanging out with the groups that come. After we were done volunteering we went to a nearby park and climbed Mount Roger to the highest point in Virginia. On the fifth day we stayed around the community center that we were staying in and helped paint and do various projects in that facility that they needed help with.
