The
2014 Laker Football Team had very high expectations coming into the
season. In 2013 GV made a deep run in the playoffs, and made it to the
national semi-finals where they lost to the team that would go on to
win the the 2013 National Championship. In 2014 there would be almost
twenty returning seniors, and the season looked very promising. The
first game of the season came, with very high energy and excitement
from both the team, and the school as a whole. The team would travel to
California and play Azusa Pacific, a school GV beat the previous year
by a generous margin. Unfortunately, the first game did not go in GV's
favor, and they lost a very close game. The team would then go on to
lose the next two games, and putting the team's record at 0-3. This was
one of Grand Valley's worst starts to any season in school history.
Despite
the overflow of talent on the team, GV just could not seem to win
games. There were a lot of good players out on the field, but there was
no team chemistry, which is what ultimately hurt the laker football
team in 2014.
On the defensive side of the ball there were a lot
of standouts on all levels. The defensive line had three very good
seniors, with Matt Mosley, Isaiah Dunning and Frank Boenzi along with
the team MVP, junior, Matt Judon. At the linebacker position there
was also a lot of talent. Major standouts were redshirt sophomores
David Talley, Brad Horling and Joe Moran. Not to mention the team
leader in tackles, senior Deonte Hurrst. As for the defensive backs
the major standouts were senior Devonte Jones, redshirt sophomore Donte
Carry and redshirt freshman Garrett Pougnet at safety.
On the offensive side of the ball there were also a number of players that had great 2014 seasons On
the offensive line Eric Labuhn played a large role until he was
injured halfway through the season. Luckily, our very skilled offense
of line did not graduate many seniors and returning will be our all
GLIAC lineman Jim Walsh and Brandon Revenburg. At the quarterback
position there were two outstanding seniors in Heath Parling and Isaiah
Grimes. Both played a considerable amount their senior season.
The
running back position was one that suffered a lot of injury in 2014.
We lost star running back Michael Ratay to a season ending injury, but
luckily there was depth at the position and senior Chris Robinson had a
great seaon, along with redshirt sophomore Terrel Dorsi. The wide
receiver core had a lot of young talent in 2014. The major standouts
were redshirt junior Jamie Potts, redshirt freshman Brandon Bean,
redshirt freshman Matt Williams, and senior Keontre Miskel.
