History of Grand Valley Football
Grand Valley football began in the 1970s, and was one of the key factors in Grand Valley's rise from a small college to a regional university. President Arend D. Lubbers came to Grand Valley in 1969 and is the one that began the initial push to have a football team, because he knew that it would help turn Grand Valley from a smaller commuter college, into a larger university.
1971 was the year when Grand Valley first kicked off for their first varsity football season, under head coach Robert Collins. Coach Collings was a successful high school coach at Ottawa Hills High School in Grand Rapids before coming to Grand Valley.
