The Profession

Athletic Training is an allied health care profession recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA). The certified athletic trainer is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in the health care of athletes and those engaging in physical activity. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, the athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports programs and other athletic health care settings including industrial health clinics. Areas of expertise include risk management and injury prevention, acute care of injuries and illness, assessment and evaluation, and rehabilitation of sport injuries.

Vision

The vision of the Grand Valley State University Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) is to be recognized as an outstanding undergraduate program that provides exceptional education through the utilization of interactive classroom instruction and clinical experiences; preparing students to excel on the Board Certification Exam and to enter the profession as qualified health care providers.  The ATEP also strives to promote the Athletic Training profession as an essential component of the allied health care field.

Mission

The mission of the Grand Valley State University Athletic Training Education Program is to prepare undergraduate entry-level professionals to enhance the quality of health care for athletes and the physically active. Preparation is supported by formal instruction, clinical experience, and research.

Accreditation

The GVSU Athletic Training program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).
