Frogs and Their Life Cycle

Grade Level Targeted- 2nd

Science Standards Addressed

            Michigan Curriculum Framework Science Benchmarks

                        Organization of Living Things

·        I am following this Michigan Science Benchmark by teaching the complete life cycle of a frog.  Through my planned activities the students will gain knowledge through vocabulary, the interesting facts that I’ve found, and from their own questions.

·

National Science Education Standards

            National Standard C

·        I am following this National Science Education Standard by teaching the lifecycles of a frog, along with characteristics of the frog, and interesting frog facts.  I plan on doing this though the lifecycle poster, flashcards, Jeopardy, and a quiz.

Background Information

·        I have included a sheet with background information on frogs.  I have highlighted the information that I found important.  I have also included a list of frequently asked questions in case a student has a question neither a sub nor I know the answer to.  I also have Interesting Facts and Frogtastic Facts for the students.

Materials

·        Notebook paper, pencils, scissors, coloring crayons or colored pencils, glue, frog pictures to be colored, background information on frogs, frog interesting facts, Ranger Rick Magazines, National Geographic World Magazine, Your Big Backyard Magazine, green and red construction paper, black marker, brown paper sack, white computer paper, lifecycle poser (including all Velcro parts), flashcards, frog poem, Jeopardy game (including notecards), candy, frog books from library, quiz.

5E Model

·        I plan on engaging the students by asking them what frogs look like, where they live and how do they grow and change.  This will help create an interest with the students.

·        We are going to explore by looking at three different magazines.  I will have the students look at three pictures that show the life cycle and have them try and explain what they are observing.

·        I plan on explaining the frog lifecycle by using the poster that I created.  I will do this by explaining each stage of the cycle as I Velcro it up.  The students will also create their own mini-lifecycle; they will write what is happening at each stage in their own words.  I believe that this will help the students understand the cycle better.  We are also going to make flashcards which will help the students understand each stage a little better.

·        The class is going to elaborate by working together to put the lifecycle together on the poster.  The class is going to play a game of Jeopardy.  By doing this the students can show how much they have learned over the past four days.

·        Finally I will evaluate the class by having the students once again answer the three questions: What do frogs look like, where do frogs live, and how do frogs grow and change.  I have a quiz for the students to take, and they are going to each come up individually and put together the lifecycle poster.  When the students are putting together the lifecycle poster they are going to have to explain what is going on at each stage, so that I can see how much knowledge they have gained from my frog lifecycle lesson plan.
