As the moon rose in the sky that night, a rogue group of thieves were about and they ambushed them.  Young Shinta tried to protect the women of the group after all the men were killed, but they shielded him to protect him from the brutality of the night and to keep him from being killed as well.  As much as they tried to thwart off the bandits, the young girls are killed one by one as a helpless Shinta looks on.  When the bandits were finished slaying the women, they went after the boy.  Shinta thought he was dead and closed his eyes.  But he didn’t feel anything.  He opened his eyes to see a lone swordsman standing with a blood stained sword and all the bandits killed.  The swordsman introduced himself as Hiko Seijuro and afterwards took Shinta under his tutelage to teach him the way of Hiten-Mitsurugi Ryo.

Years passed and the young Shinta grew into a fine young man.  Learning the ways of swordsmanship from his master, Shinta, now known as Himura Kenshin, makes his way from student to manslayer of the falling Tokugawa way of life.  The samurai are becoming extinct as the dawn of the Meiji Revolution falls upon
Japan.  The young student leaves his master and his training to go off to help those that are too weak too defend themselves.  Unaware of the fate that will befall him, Kenshin finds his way into Kyoto

Here, in Kyoto, we learn of the man that made blood rain from the sky, the woman that would tame his heart, and of the scars that befall Kenshin until the day he dies.
