Fear and anxiety is normal for almost everyone, but in some cases it can
get out of control. Anxiety can reach dramatic levels which can
eliminate productivity and significantly influence one's quality of
life. There are many different types of Anxiety Disorders including
Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD). Anxiety disorders are hard to treat and are
often accompanied by depression and even suicidal thoughts and actions.
Depression is a medical condition that is far more serious than a
passing bad mood or feeling "down in the dumps." Depression affects
one's self-concept and the way they eat, sleep and think. People
suffering from Depression can not simply wish their feelings away or
"get over it," but proper treatment can significantly help someone
recover.
Below are two photos of my friend Emily, who has battled Anxiety,
Depression and suicidal thoughts for several years. She had self-harm
tendencies and to cope with those tendencies, she began to dye her hair
a variety of colors and self-pierce her ears several times.
To the left is a photo of Emily and me, shortly after her fourth
suicide attempt, while she was recieving treatment including medication
and therapy.
To the right is a photo of Emily after recovery, and her self-confidence and quality of life have increased greatly.
Here is a photo of my friend Austin, whom I have lost due to suicide in
early 2012. You can see his obituary and other photos of him by
