High-End
The "Big Three" of high-end guitars, $1000 or more, are Taylor, Gibson, and Martin

Taylor guitars started in 1970 by Bob Taylor.  Taylor guitars are well known for their amazing playablitiy and brilliant sound.  Many pop artists such as Jason Mraz play Taylors

Gibson guitars are generally known for their electric guitars.  Their acoustic guitars are just as well made though.  They have a full powerful sound that many country artist love.

Martin guitars were established in 1833 and many proffessional guitarist considered Martin the guitar that tops all.  They are constructed with a beautiful rich tone, and are very easy to play

There are also other brands that carry high end guitars such as Breedlove, Guild, and Ovation.

Mid-Level

For a mid-level guitar, around $500 to $1000 dollars, it would be smarter to invest in different brands than the ones already stated, becuase there are makes that specialize in mid-level guitars.
These brands are Alvarez, Epiphone, Ibanez, and Washburn.
Theses mid-level guitars may also have lower end guitars, but they are obviously not as nice.

Before you Buy

The best advice any one can give you about buying a guitar is play it before you buy it.  Even if it is a popular high-end guitar that everyone else says is good, if it does not feel good to you, don't buy it.  With lower-end guitars the consistency is lost and some sound terrible while others sound like a guitar five times what you paid, but you'll never know unless you play it.
