James Polk
Expansionist President. Actively pursued Texas and Oregon Territories

Sent Troops into Mexico to enforce Texan Border

Died shortly after leaving office in 1849

Zachary Taylor
2nd President to die office, after consuming bad cherries and milk
12th President
Persuaded Californian and New Mexican settlers to draw up state constitutions prohibiting slavery
1849-1850
Threatened force against southerners who disagreed with this

Millard Fillmore
Wilmot Proviso passed during tenure: no land gained after Mexican war can have slavery
13th President
Signed the fugitive slave act in 1852
1850-1853
Was not re-nominated by his party

Franklin Pierce
Son was killed by a train 2 months before he took office
14th President
Kansas-Nebraska Act: Repealed the Missouri Comprimise
1853-1857
Was not re-nominated by his party

James Buchanan
Dred Scott Decision handed down during his tenure
15th President
Wanted Kansas admitted as a slave state, this failed and it remained a territory
1857-1861
He "denied the legal right of states to secede, but the federal government could not enforce this.

Abraham Lincoln
First President to be Assassinated in office
16th President
Signed the emancipation proclamation, which made slaves in the confederacy free
1861-1865
Dedicated the military cemetary at Gettysburg with the Gettysburg Address

Andrew Johnson
Pardoned all southerners that would take an oath of allegiance
17th President
Passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866, that made slaves citizens of the U.S., and forbade discrimination against them
1865-1869
First President to Be Impeached, though he would later be aquitted

Ulysses Grant
Accepted presents from admirers
18th President
Allowed radical reconstruction to run it's course in the south
1869-1877
He brought part of his army staff to the white house with him

Rutherford Hayes
His wife banished liquors and wines from the White House while he was in office
19th President
First President to lose the popular vote, but win the electoral vote, and the presidency. A comprimise to remove troops from Louisiana and South Carolina helped land him in office
1877-1881
His election led to sweeping election reforms.

James Garfield
Attacked Political Corruption and sought to restore prestige back to the presidency
20th President
Elected by less that 10,000 votes
1881

Shot while in office, died several months later of infection and internal bleeding
