A. Conceptual Analysis
The Grand Rapids Goodwill
website will be used my a variety of audiences from people looking
to hire, people wanting to get hired, people wanting to donate, and
people wanting to shop at Goodwill. Other businesses in the community
will be looking at this website to get information about Goodwill and
to get information on how the business can hire Goodwill. This audience
will more than likely have a good amount of computer and web experience.
These people will be well-educated, middle to upper class. Both genders
are likely to be in this category and from high school graduates on
up to pre-retirement age could be in this category.
There may also be people looking to be hired by Goodwill using this
website. This audience will be lower class, less educated, and have
less experience with computers and the web. They could be both genders
and from ages 16 on up.
When looking to donate to Goodwill many people may consult this website
to get the information they need. These people could be any gender and
from high school age on up. Because the range is so large for the people
that donate to Goodwill it is hard to pick out a social class or be
able to tell what type of computer experience they have. They will probably
have a moderate knowledge of computers, but older adults with less web
experience may also be using this website to find out information on
how to donate.
The Goodwill website also has information for people who want to shop
at Goodwill. This audience could be from any social class, any gender,
and from high school age on up. Their computer and web experience will
vary, but it may more than likely be moderate if they seek this information
on the web. They may be able to navigate easily through a well-organized
and simple website.
The objectives of this website are to educate, inform, market, and help
to make a decision. Other local businesses will be looking at the website
to find out information about the Goodwill. They will also be looking
at information to help them make a decision if they want to hire Goodwill
or not. Businesses will be looking at prices and the integrity of Goodwill.
People in the community will be using the Goodwill website to shop at
Goodwill by being linked to the online shopping website. They will also
be using it to find out information on how to donate, how to get hired,
and where the stores are located. The people that are going to donate
to Goodwill may also be looking for tax deduction information or how
to simply donate money not materials. People looking to get hired may
want information on the process of getting hired, what types of jobs
are available, what types of classes they can take, who’s teaching
the classes, when the classes are, and pay rates when they are hired.
People may also use the website to get contact information to send a
comment or to speak with someone at Goodwill. These are all possible
uses of the Goodwill website.
B. Content Analysis
In order to obtain information about Goodwill, Amanda Barr is the contact.
The text for each page exists and it will only need to be revised to
fit the tone for each audience. There should be a more formal tone for
the section where businesses will be looking and a more emotional tone
for the other sections. Some information may need to be taken out because
it gives too much information to the audience – sections of the
report card. The graphics work very well with the website, but unfortunately,
we cannot keep them because of new laws about picture of actual individuals.
We will have to use the pictures from the website Goodwill of Grand
Rapids has a contract with, which Goodwill is currently using for their
brochures. These pictures will have to be chosen and downloaded and
imported into the webpage. Overall, the Goodwill website needs to be
undated, revised and have different pictures chosen. The logo will stay
the same and the categories (Donate, Shop, Hire, Meet, Programs and
Services) will remain the same. This will help users to find what they
are looking for without having to look at information they do not need.
C. Web Structure, Content, and Interface Design
The actual site will be more navigational. There will be a navigation
bar at the top of each page. Each link the user clicks on gives him
options under the navigation bar –a sub-navigation bar- that will
help him to choose exactly what he wants to see. The index page will
be easier to navigate and the user will be able to see pictures on the
index page still along with the navigation bar at the top of the page.
To make it easier to navigate and see exactly where the user is on the
page, the link will be highlighted after being chosen and the categories
will change under the link to make it easier for the user to pick what
he wants to read or see. The logo and the colors, blue, white and green,
will stay the same to keep the familiar look of the Goodwill organization.
Each page will have the navigation bar at the top and the sub-navigation
bar underneath it then the rest of the page will be split into two rows.
One row will have all of the text and the title, while the other row
will have graphics or a picture that goes along with the page. This
will give the website a connected feeling, allowing the user to navigate
through the site without feeling like each page is an entirely new website.
From each page the user will be able to get to any other page including
the home page easily.
D. Development Information
I kept the same color scheme as
the original Goodwill website. Many of the text and written parts have
stayed the same with a few revisions, and some of the sections have
been deleted altogether because the information did not seem to pertain
to anyone what would be using this website. I also used the same logo
of the original Goodwill website. To keep this site complete, it should
be continuously updated from job openings to the calendar of events.
Also, the names and addresses of the executive staff members needs to
be updated. The pictures need to be updated to pictures that can legally
be used by the Goodwill organization. A variety of pictures have been
used from the old website and other pictures, but the old pictures should
be replaced.
If they chose to use this website, it will be on the web, no longer
on my public_html server. I would ask Goodwill of Grand Rapids for their
FTP login information and password in order to FTP the website to them,
so they will have all of the files to go back and add, delete, change,
or update items.
E. Web Promotion and Maintenance
This website should be maintained weekly or every
other week to keep the information like job openings up to date. The
website is not very labor intensive. It requires small maintenance tasks
that will take a few hours to do.
The meta-tags that were used for keyword include: volunteer, donate,
goodwill, Grand Rapids, Michigan,
The meta-tag that was used for the description is: Goodwill of Greater
Grand Rapids, Michigan assists people with disabilities or other barriers
to realize their full employment potential and to be self-reliant, self-supporting
and contributing members of our society.
