La Pulperia Nica Membership

Why Join?

“I think that other people should join La Pulperia Nica because it provides a great opportunity for students to learn about things that they may not otherwise have a lot of exposure to, get a feel for Nica products and culture, and have fun doing it with a dynamic group of members! ”- Shawna, Vice President

How to Join-

To join La Pulperia Nica you can either come to a regularly scheduled meeting or contact us at nica@student.gvsu.edu

Officers-

        President:      Courtney Currie

“I wanted to help workers in Nicaragua.  I did not know how, exactly, and considered the sale of pottery. Once we had actually seen the pottery, that option seemed less possible and I realized I needed an alternative. Coffee seemed to be much more attractive because it seemed it would be easier to buy, sell, promote, transport- everything. So, coffee was the final decision (with a little encouragement from others).”

            Vice President: Shawna Olson

“The reason why I joined La Pulperia Nica was because I felt that it was a great way to benefit the Nicaraguan people who work hard to make high quality products; for instance, coffee, then struggle to make any sort of profit. Also, I wanted to be able to provide other people with these products as well as inform them of some of the harsh situations the Nicaraguan people face and expose them to the beautiful Nica culture. “

            Treasurer:      Holly Bennett

“While visiting Nicaragua, I was able to see, first-hand, the horrific conditions in which people lived.  After the initial feelings of sadness and despair, I became motivated to do all that I could to improve the situation.  La Pulperia Nica gives me the opportunity to help in my own small way.  While what we are doing will not change the world, our efforts might help a few people put one more meal on their table.”

            Secretary:      Casee Willoughby

Alumni Members-

Ashley: Web Designer and moral supporter

“I was inspired on my trip to Nicaragua in the summer of 2003.  Not only did I see the devastating effects of poverty, but the resiliency of a people.  Because I took so much away from the trip, I wanted to give back in some way.  Hence, even after graduating, I am still involved with the group!”

Yann:  Program Coordination and moral supporter

"I joined La Pulperia Nica because I wanted to be part of an organization that is helping to promote the issue of Fair Trade, and to bring awareness to the social and economic crisis that the Nicaraguan people are going through. (and also because my friends are in it!)"
