ISSUES
IN EDUCATION
-
Crime in Schools:
-
One of the most recent topic
in the news is crime in the schools. A survey was taken in 1200 schools
in the 50 states in America. Crimes are committed in the majority
of schools, but only 10% reported serious violence. Serious violence
included sexual assaults, robbery, and fights with weapons.
-
How does this violence effect students? b Studies
show that violence distracts students' attention and jars them so that
their mental performance is injured for days. There is an increase
in fear of going to school. Violence in school also lowers the chance
of students graduating high school by about 1% point to 78%
-
Classroom Size:
-
The popular cry in education now
is the demand for smaller class sizes. Clinton wants another 100,000
teachers hired within the next several years. There are both positive
and negative points
-
The negative is the fact that smaller classroom hurts
lower income districts as teachers flee to meet the demand for increased
personnel in more affluent districts. There will also be an increase
in more poorly trained teachers.
-
The positive is the fact that there will be more
one on one attention between the teacher and the student.
READING AND WRITING:
Since I am majoring in the English/Language Arts
field there are many web sites that I have discovered that pertain to both
reading and writing. I have found that children learn so much by
reading or having quality books read to them. I want to encourage
kids of all ages to enrich their lives by reading some award winning books.
Here are two that I found particularly fun:
Shiloh by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann
There are many fun and educational books out on the
market. A list can be found at http://ils.unc.edu/award/home1.html
Writing is another essential tool in the learning
process. Children need to learn the basic
rules of grammar, word usage, and spelling.
I also want to teach students how to use their creativity by creating stories.
I will teach about plot characters and the elements
of a good story.
LESSON PLANS:
Here a list of web sites that contain lesson
plans for all subjects:
