Anything and Whatever

An Ode to TCM, Divorcees and Fever in Spring

I can't even remember how long it's been since I watched an old movie on Turner Classic Movies. However long it's been, it's been torturous. I don't remember when I started watching old movies. It would have to have been whenever the basic cable package began including the American Movie Classics (AMC) channel (you know, back when they actually showed old movies instead of repeating the Rocky Quintupletogy all day long). That's when I first fell in love with old movies. When AMC stopped showing old movies except in the early hours of the morning and TCM, which showed old movies every hour of the day, was added to the basic cable package—that's when I became obsessed with old movies.

And now I can't watch old movies on television anymore. I blame the economy. My family switched to the really basic cable package because cable television has gotten more and more expensive. I hate seeing TCM scroll by on the TV Guide channel. I see all of the great movies that I don't get to watch anymore. I do own some of my favorite old movies though. Movies Unlimited is an amazing source for almost any old movie that you're looking for. So far there have only been two that I can't find: The Divorcee and Spring Fever.

It's not completely true that I can't find The Divorcee. It's part of a box set of movies that I don't want to buy. I'm still trying to find it on its own. I may have to just break and down and purchase the box set. It's such a great movie. It stars Norma Shearer, who is amazing. If you happen to see it on TCM check it out.

Another movie that I can't find anywhere, not even as part of an expensive box set, is Spring Fever. It's a silent movie starring William Haines and Joan Crawford, who looks so much different early on in her career. If you happen to come across this movie watch it. The way William Haines moves on screen is lovely.

I don't know how much longer I can last without TCM. I've been thinking about what I can give up so that I can have my old movies back. Whatever it is it will be worth it.

Sorry. I can't spare any money just so you can get your cable back.

Book: The Beekeeper's Apprentice

firefox This is one of my favorite books. I've read this book so many times and I still haven't grown tired of it. It's about Sherlock Holmes. True Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts may not appreciate the storyline. I'd never read any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. I purchased them after I'd read The Beekeeper's Apprentice. I feel the book captures the character of Holmes well, no matter the company he keeps.
