What is the Student Reading Series?
The student reading series consists of monthly readings, consisting of 4 to 5 readers, that offer writing students the chance to publicly share their work in front of a student/faculty audience. In addition to open readings, certain dates are reserved solely for graduating seniors as a showcase of their best work. The Student Reading Series has also organized contests (the infamous Poetry Smackdown of 2006 and the more recent Short Story Contest in November of 2007) and themed readings (Valentine's Day Love v. Hate reading).
Readings are planned, organized, publicized, and run by a group of students, and overseen by professor Ander Monson. Volunteers are welcome each year as current members graduate and/or move on to bigger, better things.
Who can participate?
Everyone! The Grand Valley Student Reading Series welcomes readers of any academic standing. Theres no limit to the amount of times you can participate; however, in the event that space is limited new readers will be given priority.
Why should I participate?
Writers of creative work should experience reading their work in public. Published authors are frequently asked to visit universities and book signings to share their work and talk about their writing. Presenting writing orally offers writers a unique perspective and social context from which to receive criticism and audience response.
As a bonus for participating, students receive printed broadsides showcasing their work.
What's a Broadside?
Broadsides are one-sided mini posters with artistic settings that enhance a poem or excerpt from an essay or story. They are provided at readings as a program for audience members and a keepsake for readers. Check out previous broadsides here .
How do I get involved?
If you're interested in volunteering to work with the Student Reading series there are several options to consider. The Student Reading Series needs individuals interested in recruitment of readers, event planning, and publicity design. If interested, contact one of the current coordinators: Kenneth Caldwell, Lindsey Drager, Dolly Laninga, or Megan Shorter. Send a shout out to the SRS e-mail: srsgvsu@gmail.com, or speak to Ander Monson.
