Design Process Report Continued
Production costs
Currently, Grand Valley State University is providing the web space for this site. Were that space to become unavailable, a deluxe hosting plan from godaddy.com, which includes 150 GB of space, would cost $6.99 per month.
Concepts learned
Creating this site allowed me to practice my html and web content strategy skills. The first site I have created using html, this site required hours of experimentation to create the correct code. Overall, I learned that attention to detail is vital when building sites with html, and that trial and error is often necessary.
If I could begin the process over, I would have laid out the design for the site’s pages using InDesign before beginning to write the html code. While perfecting the box sizes and colors, I wasted several minutes looking up color codes and finding the correct places to make changes in the code.
In creating the content, I learned quickly that I would have to be concise. Although the site provides more room than a resume, using too much of that space only cluttered up my pages. I want visitors to my site to read as much as possible so the chances of them being interested in me as an employee are increased. Text that is too long or not easily scanned will turn them off.
Conclusion
Although it was time-consuming and sometimes frustrating, I am thankful to have completed the process of building my first site using html. I believe that building another site using html will take half as much time now that I have gained skill and practice. Having a resume site compiled and ready to show employers will also be beneficial as I prepare to graduate college.
