Feed Detective Notebook

In order to help us prepare for class discussions while we are reading at home, we are going to record our observations in our “Feed Detective Notebooks.”  Please divide your notebook into six sections, and label it with the headings below.  Always include page numbers with entries.  Do not lose your notebook and please remember to use it.  It will be graded at the end of the unit.

Slang Decoder

Some of the words that Titus and his friends use are slang words that the author made up for the book.  Help yourself and your classmates decode the way the characters talk by pairing “Feed slang” to slang words that you and your friends use today.

English-to-English Wordbook

Violet and her Father use some pretty big words.  You could sit and wonder what in the world they are talking about if you like, but you might as well look the words up in the dictionary.  Record your definitions here.

Déjà-vu

Ever experience déjà-vu while reading?  If there is a theme, topic, or situation that keeps occurring, record it in this section.

Suspicious Predictions

We’ve all had the experience of predicting the ending of a movie because someone said something suspicious early on.  If you get those suspicions while reading, record them here.  The author might be dropping you a hint in order to foreshadow or predict what will happen next.

Hints of Disaster

Quite a few strange things have happened to humans and the environment in Feed.  List any hints you find about the condition of the environment or the condition of humanity here.

Real-World Connector Cable

Many authors use fictional ideas, items, or situations to make a real commentary about the current world around them.  M.T. Anderson said that Feed is “a novel that uses images from an imagined future in an almost allegorical way.”  What fictional ideas, items or situations from this novel could have direct connections to things in our world today?  Record those fictional things and their possible realistic equivalents here.

You can post your observations so that the whole class can see them by logging on to www.nicenet.org .  Create a username, and join the class with the key number 47CB86W49.  You should post no less than 5 comments to the discussion board.  Your comments will provide discussion material for class.
