Lesson Plan for Day #1
Title:
Getting interested in Feed and looking ahead
Overview: In class today, we will listen to a podcast
book trailer on Feed as an introduction to the novel. We will also prepare to take notes in a
structured way as we read. We will
discuss the different kinds of things to look for in the novel. This will help the class to prepare for
future discussions we will have.
Goals / Objectives:
·
Students will
become interested in reading Feed, by M.T. Anderson
·
Students will
begin to understand some of the slang used in Feed
·
Students will
know how to log on to the class discussion board
·
Students will be
ready to make observations about their reading in order to contribute to class
discussions
Materials / Resources Needed
Computer with audio and
visual projection capabilities
“Feed Detective Notebook”
handouts
Notebooks or stapled packets
of paper
Activities / Procedures:
I will pass out the books and
play the podcast trailer for Feed. |
10 minutes |
I will tell the students
to pay attention to the language that the characters in the novel use as I
read aloud. I will then read the first
two paragraphs of the novel. We will discuss
the slang used, and come up with possible equivalent slang words that we use
today. I will write their ideas on the
board. |
10 minutes |
I will show students how
to log onto the class discussion board at www.nicenet.org. I will demonstrate how to make a username,
and how to join the class “Feed,” Key number 47CB86W49. I will then transfer the list of slang
words and their equivalents into the discussion forum, “Slang Decoder” pg.
number 3. |
10 minutes |
I will pass out the handout
titled “Feed Detective Notebook.” This
handout has the same categories as the discussion board. I will explain the next four note taking
categories, giving examples as needed.
We will not cover “Real-World Connector Cable” at this time. I will inform students that they are not
expected to make observations for this sixth category yet. |
15 minutes |
Students will make
notebooks with 6 sections to correspond with the six note taking categories
in order to make quick observations while reading. I will instruct them to take notes as they
read the first 28 pages for tomorrow’s class. |
5 minutes |
Assessment:
The “Feed Detective
Notebook” will provide an opportunity for assessment. Students will receive credit for filling out the
notebook as they read and posting at least five of their observations on the
discussion board. Observations should be
clear and include the page number.
