While it is hard to argue with Soviet
views of life, the Grand Valley's Rowing Club likes to think that
there is a little more to the sport of rowing than narrow boats.
Rowing is the oldest collegiate sport, consisting of intense training,
team unison, technique, commitment, and yes, narrow boats. The
Grand Valley Rowing Club is one of the largest clubs on campus, consisting
of "diehard" athletes that love the sport so much that they pay to play.
Year-round training and top notch coaching allow this
"club" to compete at the varsity level against any crew in the
nation or the world. The team regularly races Big Ten schools
in the local regattas (fancy crew word for race) and travels to England
and Croatia to compete world-wide
.
The sport requires faith and unity with your teammates.
The best of friendships are forged throughout the training, the
winning, and even the losing. Until the day of the regatta it's
competition within the team to determine the lineups of the boats.
Once the race comes around though it's your team versus any and all
comers. The teamwork and training connect you to your teammates
and many friendships are created.
Rowers must be some of the most fit athletes in the
world. After a race, the entire body has been pushed to the
max. Not bad for a bunch of narrow boats eh?
2005 Fall Preview:
The girls return 7 of 9 from their impressive Dad Vails 8 this year. They
seem to be the favored boat in the preseason. Joining them are other
strong, proven returning varsity rowers and the little girls that took us
all by storm in the '04 spring season, aka this year's sophmores. While
the lose of KP and Anne Varner/Vainner to graduation will be felt throughout
the season, the girls definitely have a shot at an incredibly successful
season. Tear em a new one girls.
While the girls have in experience they guys hope to make up for with young
energy. Ross, Tyler, Scott, and Darren are the only returning upperclassmen
after graduating sexy beasts Rob Johnson, Michael Slieger, and Dane Galagher.
However there is a large class up and coming from last years novice.
Between the higher numbers and Tim this year's varsity has potential
to do some serious damage. Let's roll boys.
The novice girls could have a gigantic team if Trip and Cody recruit.
The novice boys team size will probably depend on the size of the novice
girls team.
