Best Practices

Teaching methods I’ve practiced in various classroom settings.

GVSU Professional Development Seminars (2006)

A comprehensive list of elementary education professional development in-service topics I experienced in the Fall semester of 2006.

West Michican Inclusion Network Conference (2005 & 2006)

I have had the privilege of attending two WIN conferences.  I gained both personal and professional insights on the struggles and triumphs of inclusion for students with special needs.  Attending various break-out sessions allowed me to learn about the application of inclusion strategies that I will use in my future classroom.

HOSTS Mentor (2004 – 2005)
HOSTS stands for Helping One Student at a Time to Succeed.  I did so by g
uiding first grade tutees one-on-one through lessons focused on reading, writing, vocabulary, listening, thinking, and study skills.  I was then given the responsibility of evaluating mastery of various reading and decoding skills, and reporting to the FACTS coordinator.  I started off as a mentor due to a class requirement, but enjoyed the experience so much that I continued on to a second semester.  It was a valuable experience that opened up my eyes to the reality that our students come from diverse and often challenging backgrounds.

P.A.L.S. Program Mentor (2002 – 2004)

As a member of Grand Valley’s program for two years, I was able to spend several hours a week reading, talking, playing, coloring, and going out with my pals.  We also participated in group events to strengthen the big sibling/little sibling relationship!
