Football is able to trace its roots back to early versions of the game
rugby. Early games of football that were played can date back to around
1820 when students at Yale, Harvard, Princeton, and Dartmouth played
their own versions of football. Walter Camp, a Yale graduate student is
commonly known as the "Father of Football" after he enrolled at Yale in
1876. He was able to enhance the game and create many changes the are
still in effect today such as each team having eleven players on the
field at a time. In 1922, what we now know as the National Football
League, or NFL was created. Popularity in the NFL came from the 1958
Championship game, which is commonly known as "The Greatest Game Ever
Played." After this game, popularity in football was rapidly expanding
at both the college and professional levels. Since then, football has
made many other changes to keep up and maintain its popularity such as
the Super Bowl in the National Football League and the both the
collection of bowl games and the National Championship game at the
collegiate level.
