The Center for Sex Offender Management (CSOM), established in June 1997, states its goal is to enhance public safety by preventing further victimization through improving the management of adult and juvenile sex offenders who are in the community.  The Center for Sex Offender Management is sponsored by the Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice, in collaboration with the National Institute of Corrections, State Justice Institute, and the American Probation and Parole Association.  It is administered through a cooperative agreement between OJP and the Center for
Effective Public Policy. This Web site hold a wealth of information and links for anyone interested in sex offender management. As an example: CSOM has just posted Key Considerations for Reunifying Adult Sex offenders and their Families -- a must read for anyone working with sexually molested children. Also, you can find Overview of Sex Offender Treatment for a Non-Clinical Audience, which is a curriculum outline for training community groups on topics such as sex offender treatment, sex offender recidivism, and community protection.

The National Institute of Corrections (NIC) provides federal, state, and local corrections agencies with training, technical assistance, information services, and policy/program development assistance. Sex Offender Assessment & Risk Prediction:

There are a number of sex offender assessment and risk prediction instruments; some are complicated and expensive to purchase and administer, some are more simple and inexpensive. Two of the inexpensive ones (they are free, actually) can be found at the Canadian Government's Web site on Safety and Emergency Preparedness. The two instruments are the RRASOR and the STATIC 99 (the STATIC 99 is an expanded and improved version of the RRASOR). Both instruments are are contained in documents which also explain how to use the instruments. These instruments lend themselves to easy use by anybody involved in sex offender management and treatment. However, The risk assessment procedures contained in these reports have been developed by the authors in the course of their duties. Anyone choosing to use or adopt these risk assessment procedures, in any way, do so on the sole basis of their responsibility to judge their suitability for their own specific purposes. IMTS and its partners neither assume nor accept responsibility or legal liability for any injury or damages whatsoever resulting from the use of these risk assessment instruments. You will need Adobe Acrobat to download these reports. www.sgc.gc.ca/res/cor/rep/cprmindex-en.asp.

Domestic and Sexual Violence Prevention Advocacy:

Michigan Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence is dedicated to ending domestic and sexual violence in Michigan. This site has links to services for domestic violence and sexual assault victims, policy positions, descriptions of anti-violence demonstration projects, and much more. A good site for anyone interested in domestic and sexual violence topics, educators, and anyone having children. www.mcadsv.org

Family Watchdog is a national organization that attempts to track sex offenders. It has a neat feature of being able to display a map of your zip code area that shows where sex offenders life in relationship to your home. If you register, it will also alert you via email when a new sex offender registers an address in your area. This is a free service (they ask for donations) but they do sell self-help safety stuff such a videos on how to protect your children. Users should keep in mind that the sex offender information on this site is secured from state and federal sex offender registries, which are notoriously inaccurate. http://12.familywatchdog.us/

Sex Offender Registries:

Michigan’s Public Sex Offender Registry gives a legislation summary, the full text of the sex offender registration act, and a list of registered sex offenders in Michigan. Users are cautioned that this list is notoriously out of date and often inaccurate. Note: This URL is frequently unavailable. If you find it unavailable, try again in a day or so. www.mipsor.state.mi.us/

US Department of Justice’s National Sex Offender Registry lists registered sex offenders by state. Users are cautioned that these lists are notoriously out of date and often inaccurate. www.nsopr.gov/
