Grand Valley Water Polo traveled to Miami University to participate in the Kevin McGarity Invitational. This tournament included four of the top five club teams in the nation. Along with Grand Valley, Michigan State, Michigan, and Arizona were among the list of teams who participated. Grand Valley opened their weekend with a Saturday afternoon contest with #2 ranked Michigan State. Grand Valley was ready to redeem their one goal loss from two weeks prior. The two teams were deadlocked at three after the first period. The Lakers pulled away as the game progressed and fought off a late fourth quarter Spartan surge and held on for an 8-7 victory. The Lakers then went on to finish their bracket play with a commanding 17-5 victory over Miami “B.” The victories put Grand Valley first in their bracket and set up an important match-up with the # 4 ranked Arizona Wildcats. Grand Valley and Arizona played exciting game which found the Lakers on the losing end. Grand Valley had an early two goal lead which was quickly surrendered and gave Arizona a 4-3 halftime lead. The Wildcats pulled away in the second half and defeated the Lakers 9-6. The Lakers battled Miami “A” for third place on Sunday morning. The Lakers and Red Hawks played a close contest and Grand Valley won 11-8 and finished in 3rd place, the Lakers best finish of the season. Grand Valley travels to Toledo, OH this weekend to participate in the first Great Lakes Division tournament of the year.
