Facility Description:
Goodwill has established the Janitorial Training at the corporate office in Grandville and at our downtown location, the Urban Center, consisting of a classroom as well as hands-on training in an office environment where participants are paid while they put their newly acquired skills into action.

General Description of Training:
The Janitorial Training is an intensive, 4 week course, where participants learn the fundamentals of cleaning through classroom instruction, and then apply what they've learned while cleaning in our office location. This is paid, on the job training. The participants are taught safety, importance of attendance, rules and regulations, cleaning, sanitizing, supplies, awareness, and floor care.

Goodwill offers a paid transitional work experience component as part of this training. The rate of pay is $5.15 per hour.

Proposed Length of Course:
This 4-week course consists of 3 hours of classroom training time, and 20 hours per week of paid training for 4 weeks.

Where will the participants work?
They will be cleaning at Goodwill's corporate office location or at the Urban Center.

What will they be doing?
Participants will take the information they have learned in the classroom and apply it in a real work environment at both locations. This will include general cleaning, dusting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, sanitizing, practicing basic safety techniques, utilizing communication skills, and interacting with co-workers, customers, staff and supervisors.

Eligibility Criteria:
The participants must exhibit the desire to work, must be clean and sober, and have the capability of remembering the information learned.

Certificate of Completion Criterion:
Participant must complete 80% to pass and receive certificate of completion. They will be able to receive a certificate of participation if they have not achieved 80% of competencies. The program only allows two days missed, excused or unexcused. The third day they will be terminated from the program, but not Goodwill services. They will be expected to repeat the entire program to graduate successfully. Two tardies equals one absence.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the participant is often required to stand for long periods of time, walk, use hands, talk or hear.
  • Regularly required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, taste or smell.The participant must regularly lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to focus.

Instructional tools and equipment to be used:
Vacuum, broom, mop, dust mop, rags, squeegee, duster, edge vacuum cleaner, etc. All of these tools and equipment are provided by Janitorial Training and are included in the cost of training.
