About Me

"I literally don't quite feel right if I haven't written for a while. A week is about as long as I can go without getting extremely edgy. It's like a fix. It really is a compulsion." -J. K. Rowling in Newsweek, July 2000

Above all else, I'm a writer, and that is the one constant in my life. Whether it's an advertisement, a paper, a short story, a web site, or even a blog entry, I am always writing something. I have always enjoyed finding the best way to explain my point of view, and there is something truly amazing about finding the right words to embed my ideas in someone's mind.

From a pragmatic standpoint, good writers are always in demand. Be it in marketing and advertising, or simply in a business setting, there's a writer behind the scenes who figured out how to explain the idea. Without the right words, nothing would be sold. This (and the desire for a steady income) is why I chose to use my words in the professional realm. I enjoy seeing how my writing and design affect the world's perception, and I'd like to put those skills to work in a noticeable way.

Music also holds a special place in my life, and it always will. If writing keeps me balanced, then music keeps me sane. I played piano before I started writing, and in college I made more money with my French horn than I did with writing. I had not been planning on a music minor, but found myself taking lessons, playing in Grand Valley's top band, and playing in a great brass quintet. Last year, I added orchestra and a woodwind quintet. The piano books still come out once in a while, usually when I'm craving change, and especially when I'm feeling particularly stressed out. If writing is my heart, then music is my soul.
