Pugs originated in ancient
China from before 400 B.C. There are numerous explanation as
to the reasons why. Some believe that the monks of ancient
Buddhist monasteries bred them for their acute
personalities. Others believe that Pugs were bred in a
fashion so that the wrinkles on their faces read the name of
a famous emperor, and still others believe that the Chinese
treasured Pugs for their face's similarities to a dragon.
Though the bulging eyes of pugs do look similar to dragons,
the exact reason Chinese bred Pugs is not know. |
European Era

As the popularity of the Pug
breed spread Eastward, thanks in part to the VOC,
European royalty began to own Pugs.During this time, Pugs
were also bred to have longer legs and noses so that they
would be more useful at tracking and as guard dogs.
