What makes Hispanola truly special is it's rich history, so much of which is marked by superlatives, and the condition of many of its colonial buildings. Of the various places on the island where colonial structures can be found, Santo Domingo's Zona Colonial is by far the most impressive. Among the dozens of colonial buildings that are fully or partially intact are the oldest church in the New World and the New World's first hospital. Less spectacular than the colonial structures are dozens of the island's beaches. Not all are postcard perfect, but lovely stretches of white sand and turquoise water can be found all around the island. Perhaps the best ones are on Cayo Levantado in Bahia Samana, and on the northern coast by Puerto Plata and Sosua. |
