Dorm Room Music Production |
Software * Hardware * Personal |
A
multitude of software exists nowadays that allow the user to record and produce
music. However, certain software works better for capturing raw audio files
while others are superior for music production, such as the creation of
Electronic Dance Music or hip-hop beats. The following examples will provide
the reader with enough information to be able to distinguish which type of
software is best suitable for them.

As noted above, most of the necessary features are made obvious to the semi-experienced recording artist, while even amateurs can easily identify vital buttons and processes. Studio One 2 is most efficient to record and edit raw audio files either imported into the program or recorded directly from a microphone. The timeline runs horizontally and tracks can be stacked on top of each other so they are mixed together for the output audio.

FL Studio 11, or Fruity Loops 11, is less of raw audio recording software and more a beat production tool. It uses samples located on the local computer that are placed into a grid locked by the time signature. As opposed to being minimalistic and simple, it is much more complex and difficult to use without and prior experience and practice. It's a must to seek reference from online tutorials and manuals. Nevertheless, with this added complexity comes more capabilities and features.

At first glance, both programs look like they operate primarily the same. However, the inner workings are very different. Because audio samples are placed in the step sequencer to be triggered at specific times rather than being recorded externally to be placed into the mix, it complicates itself.
Fruity
Loops uses primarily synthesized electronic instruments in the form of
plug-ins. Almost all of the available plug-ins exist in a physical form or
console, but owning hundreds of different synths, drum machines, and other
various pieces of equipment is extremely expensive. Cost aside, there is just
simply not enough room in most cases to store and use all of these devices.
