There are a couple of special
races found on Invaria for purposes of the Balance War campaign.
Some of these links will take you to the Invaria
section of this web site. You have been warned. For more
information on the world itself, please visit the Reference
Section.
The Gnomes |
The gnomes of Invaria are a tiny race, about fifteen centimeters tall at adulthood. They are mastercrafters and are the only race able to create objects of magic beyond order-imbuing. It is hard to find and even harder to befriend this diminutive race, but once one is trusted by a gnome, it is hard for them to stop trusting. A gnome as your friend is a friend for life. |
The Humans |
Humans of Invaria are like any other race of humans one might encounter. They are found in all shapes, colors, sizes, and varieties. They range freely across Invaria. Humans, however, are also the source of the White Council at Zim and the White Armies, which are reviled and feared by many. |
Sean Jistani, King of Myst, won his kingdom away from
the White Armies of Zim ten years ago and pushed the White Armies back so much
that they could only continue to hold their home nation and have scattered
holdings in a second. With Sean's victory, the nation of Myst became a
haven for Black mages and common folk who believed in Order. The uneasy
peace Sean won, however, was not to last.
Within five years, the White Armies were back on their
feet and attempting to reconquer the territory they lost in the war against the
Silver Falcon and his Black Armies. Sean, however, was prepared for this
eventuality and confined them mostly to their own nations.
Ten years after Sean first won away Myst from the
Whites, however, the conflict that had been building since he last waged war
with the White mages and their armies was becoming too much to discount.
As such, Sean called a select group of men and women to Castle Mirdreth and
implored them as a man seeking to protect his home and those dependent on him to
help him. He called these men and women The Guard.
Thus, Crown Prince Aalander of Nylan, Misha the
Dragonslayer, the mercenary Crystal, the warrior-bodyguard Raziel, the young
mage Zoot Morgan, the monks Niku and Tomo, and the angel soldier Trinity with
her childhood friend, the healer Berkana, came together to form the elite team
Sean sought.
- Royalty -
Before telling more to the story of the Balance War, the connections between several characters need to be explained. The elven royal family, headed by the current king of Nylan, has offshoots that stretch far and wide.
The current king of Nylan, Caravel, is the
eldest son of King Ralaven and his wife, Mirella. Ralaven was a scion of
the Songblade clan, a royal line unbroken since time immemorial. Caravel
became king of Nylan after his parents' departure from the living world, and had
a son, Aalander, the current Crown Prince of Nylan. When Caravel is killed
or steps down, Aalander will become king.
Wren is the eldest daughter of Ralaven and Mirella. She
was appointed leader of her mother's family within another clan, Jistani clan
Lucis, soon after she completed her
Trial. She later met and fell in love with a human living along the
Nylan-Myst border, John Wolf, whom she wed. From this union came the half
elves Sean and Rowan Jistani, born ten years apart. Sean later became king
of Myst and built his castle at Mirdreth, once a stronghold of the Jistani
family before the elves withdrew to the nation of Nylan.
Kayvalyn is the second daughter of Ralaven and Mirella.
The tale of the birth of Berkana is a twisted, strange odyssey. Kayvalyn
was traveling to meet the man she was to marry after centuries of seclusion.
Her party was attacked and all were killed but her. Kayvalyn herself was
saved by an Angel who had been separated from his patrol squad. They lived
together a year, during which time Kayvalyn gave birth to Berkana. The
Angel took the girl to Spire to be raised while Kayvalyn went off and married
the man she was destined for.
Ardel, the youngest child of Ralaven and Mirella, was the
rebel of the family. Wanting desperately to find his own way to weave
order and chaos, he fled Nylan and traveled the world, eventually being
befriended by Timas, a gnome, who took pity on the elf and taught him a little
of the making of the magical objects that gnomes are renowned for. Ardel,
somehow, got his hands on a ring of polymorph and ended up as a gold dragon,
purely by accident. He had a fling with a female gold dragon and later
left, slowly going insane, never knowing that the dragon gave birth to his son,
Govan, half elven and half gold dragon.
There is, however, also a rather twisted web to be found in Spire.
Mynrei, Marshal of Spire, was once involved with Justen, her chief engineer aboard the Andes and later the architect of the Tower Black and all of Spire, known as "the magic engineer". Less than a year after their arrival, Mynrei gave birth to Katrine, her daughter by Justen and her appointed successor as Marshal. Justen, however, was already turning away from Mynrei, whom had become cold, harsh, and overly demanding. He fell in love with a human woman some ten years later and with her had Trinity. Mynrei, however, artificially inseminated herself with the sperm of another Angel and gave birth to Alexander. Never in a thousand years did Mynrei believe that her son would fall for her former lover's daughter.
